Health and Salvation by the Name of Jesus

“It is his name—that is, by faith in his name—that this man was healed whom you see and know. Yes, the faith that comes through Jesus has given this man this perfect health in the presence of all of you all.” – Acts 3:16

After Pentecost, the paralytic man was healed through Peter and John at the gate of the temple. It was “in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth” that they said to him, “Rise up and walk,” and as soon as the people in their amazement ran together to them, Peter declared that it was the name of Jesus which had so completely healed the man.

As the result of this miracle and of Peter’s discourse, many people who had heard the Word believed. The following day, Peter repeated these words before the Sanhedrin, “By the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth… does this man stand here before you whole”; and then he added, “There is none other name under heaven.., whereby we must be saved.” – Acts 4:12) This statement of Peter’s declares to us that the name of Jesus both heals and saves. We have here a teaching of the highest import for divine healing.

We see that healing and health form part of Christ’s salvation. In heaven even our bodies will have their part in salvation; salvation will not be complete for us until our bodies shall enjoy the full redemption of Christ. Why then should we not believe in this work of redemption here below? Even already here on earth, the health of our bodies is a fruit of the salvation which Jesus has acquired for us.

We see also that health as well as salvation is to be obtained by faith.

The tendency of man by nature is to bring about his salvation by his works. While for the body, he makes use of well-known remedies; why then should he seek for divine healing?
Happy is he who comes to understand that it is the will of God to heal; that God wills to manifest the power of Jesus, and also to reveal to us His Fatherly love; to exercise and to confirm our faith, and to make us prove the power of redemption in the body as well as in the soul. Oh, let us believe in the name of Jesus!

Wherever the Spirit acts with power, there He works divine healings. If divine healing is seen but rarely in our day, we can attribute it to the unbelief of worldlings and the want of zeal among believers. Let us pray earnestly for the Holy Spirit, let us place ourselves unreservedly under His direction, and let us seek to be firm in our faith in the name of Jesus, whether for preaching salvation or for the work of healing.

A prayer for healing

Dear heavenly Father, grant us healing today as in the days of Pentecost, so that we may glorify the name of Jesus. It is sad to see how little the power of His name is recognized today, how little it is the end of preaching and of prayer. Grant us the treasures of divine grace, of which Christians deprive themselves by their lack of faith and zeal, which are hidden in the name of Jesus. Awaken our consciences, and bring our hearts to obedience. We know, oh God, that you are ready to manifest the all-powerful healing of Your Son, and to do it in a striking way in body as well as in soul. Let us believe it for ourselves, let us believe it for others, for the circle of believers around us, and also for the Church in the whole world. Let us ask great things in Jesus’ name, counting on His promise, and we shall see You still do wonders by the name of Your holy Son.

I thank you, my Lord Jesus, that You are both the Savior of my soul and the healer of my body. Amen.

Good Nutrition and Mental Health

Mental illness is not always in our heads. Sometimes it is caused by poor nutrition, lack of exercise, substance abuse, tobacco smoking, and other unhealthy habits.

The field of Psychiatry is now emphasizing the importance of good nutrition for mental health. As a result of the chemical nature of our bodies and how it affects our brains/emotions/moods, we must be very careful about what we eat, exercise regularly, take vitamin supplements, and avoid all manner of harmful habits.

Scientists say that many people with mental illness commonly maintain poor diets, eat junk food, drink caffeine beverages, abuse alcohol and drugs, and smoke tobacco. This creates the biochemical perfect storm for mental illness. It creates a propensity for anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and many other forms of mental problems.

Good nutrition requires discipline.

Like anything else, if you want to get better you’ve got to work at bettering your eating habits. Start a new daily regimen being mindful of what you eat. Avoid foods that are high in sugar and fat, starchy carbohydrates, or processed with chemicals and preservatives.

Instead, eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, natural juices, and limit your meat intake to only once a day. Eventually, your goal should be to transition to a complete vegetarian diet if possible. Not only will you lose weight naturally, but you will feel better.

There are those in the psychiatric field are reporting that some mentally ill patients have been cured by simply changing their diet. A healthy brain depends on the steady creation of neurotransmitters which rely on the chemical makeup of our diets.

Avoid stress as much as possible

Elevated cortisol levels (the fight-or-flight hormone), released into your bloodstream in response to fear or stress, creates all kinds of health problems in your body and brain. A steady stream of cortisol and other stress hormones can also deplete vitamins in our bodies and weaken the number of neurotransmitters in the brain. Protect these important neurotransmitters. Keep calm and be happy.

Socialize more

Humans need a connection with other humans and with nature to flourish. So many people with mental illness tend to live in isolation, and that’s not good. Force yourself to go out more and participate in normal human interactions with others.

Take vitamin supplements for mental health

Vitamin B-12

After running a routine lab test, one doctor discovered that a patient suffering from panic attacks had a vitamin B-12 deficiency. So he began a series of B12 injections. Within days, the panic attacks were over.

Vitamin B-12 supplements should be consumed daily (1000 mcg). A deficiency in vitamin B12 can result in a host of illnesses like anemia, fatigue, weakness, constipation, poor appetite, weight loss, depression, bad memory and more. This important vitamin helps to regulate the nervous system, reducing depression, stress, and anxiety. Make sure that your body is getting enough vitamin B12 by eating eggs, milk, yogurt, cheese, soy, and some varieties of nutritional yeast.

Folic Acid

Folic acid is necessary for the synthesis of our neurotransmitters, which help to regulate things like mood and sleep. A significant number of depressed patients have folate deficiencies.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a key nutrient for the nervous and immune systems and low levels have been linked to depression. For some people, simply getting a bit more vitamin D from the sun and absorbed through the skin can make a difference. Others who with real deficiencies need to take vitamin D supplements.

Omega 3 Fish Oil

Omega-3, in the form of fish oil or krill oil is also important. Our bodies cannot make these essential fatty acids, and they must be acquired from either diet or supplementation. They play a key role in brain health.

Take magnesium at night to help with sleep problems and muscle relaxation. Even if sleep is not an issue for you, chances are you’re still magnesium deficient (80 percent of us are). And that’s alarming because magnesium helps control hundreds of chemical reactions in the body.

Gut health affects everything – including our brains. Studies have found that by correcting imbalances in the relative levels of certain microorganisms in our intestinal tract, patients were able to reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. In addition, probiotics in yogurt are great for people who are under a lot of stress or eat processed food.

Holistic Therapy is better than just drugs.

Many times, psychiatric drugs only treat the symptoms of mental illness, and not the underlying problem. However, modern psychiatry is recognizing, more and more, that mental health problems need to be addressed with whole body therapy – body, soul, and spirit. And good nutrition – the body’s chemical makeup – is a vital aspect of complete and effective therapy.

God’s Healing Power

Jesus once told His disciples, “Oh you of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Sometimes we can be so easily intimidated by certain illnesses and infirmities when we’re trusting that man’s opinion is the final word on the matter. The doctors may say, “This is an incurable disease,”and we think, “Oh, woe is me!”

But is anything too hard for the Lord?

Is He still the same all-powerful God who created the universe, and engineered the miraculous workings of our own human bodies? Shouldn’t we trust His word more than the incredulous opinions of others?

If you believe what cynical man has to say about divine healing you are certainly to be pitied. On the other hand, if you believe the Bible’s promises of a supernatural cure by a loving and compassionate God who can do exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think, you can be healed!

Romans 10:17 tells us that faith comes from hearing, and hearing from the word of Christ. Stop putting your faith in man and unbelieving doctors. Instead, believe in God’s healing power – for your own healing, your friends, and your family. God will never let you down if you put your trust in Him.

Below are some healing promises and affirmations that will encourage your faith. Read them every day, memorize them, and believe them with all your heart.
