Do you want to know God better, live a happy, fulfilling life, and help make a positive difference in your community? Join a local church! Here are seven important reasons why going to church is important.
1. TO KNOW JESUS CHRIST
If you’re reading this today and you have never committed your life to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, this should be your first step. Pray and invite Him into your life. Afterwards, visit your local Christian church and make them aware of your desire to know God in a personal way. Become a member of the church and allow them to teach you about God’s love and mercy, the forgiveness of sin, sanctification, water baptism, and many other things the Bible instructs Christians to know and observe.
As you begin to grow as a new believer, you’ll be amazed at how wonderful your new life in Christ will become.
2. JESUS, OUR ROLE MODEL
When we become followers of Christ, we need to be obedient to His teachings and imitate His example. Our Lord attended church regularly, therefore, we must also. The scriptures tell us that “on the Sabbath day, Jesus went into the synagogue, as was His custom” (Luke 4:16). If it was important for Jesus to be in church every Sabbath day, it should be important to us. It was His custom, and we should never neglect going to church each week except in the case of an unforeseen circumstance.
3. THE CHURCH NEEDS YOU
Another reason why we need to regularly attend a local church is that the church needs you. Yes, you! No matter how insignificant you might feel sometimes, you are very important to God and He needs you to contribute to edifying His church. Not only do you need to support your church with your financial gifts, but also with your prayers, time, talents, and other abilities. If you are not in church every week, the church is not benefiting from what you have to offer. Jesus said that one day we will have to give an account for wasting our gifts and talents (Matthew 25:14-30), so it’s best to avoid the shame of the unprofitable servant by being faithful to attend your church.
4. CHILDREN LEARN BY OUR EXAMPLE
Do you want your children to grow up to be morally responsible and godly adults someday? Then, they also need to be in church with you each week. They will learn best by following your example of faith, and faithfulness towards God. In church, your children will learn the Christian ethics and become disciples of Jesus Christ themselves at an early age. This will help them greatly as they grow and are exposed to the many evils in the world today. The Bible tells us to train a child in the ways of the Lord and he shall never depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). In church, your children will also discover their own giftings and talents and learn to become dynamic members of the family of God.
5. UNITY IN MARRIAGE
Your wife or husband also need to be in church with you regularly. There is a wise proverb that says, “The couple that prays and worships together, stays together.” Couples who attend church regularly have happier marriages. Studies have shown that they are fifty percent less likely to be discontent with each other, or get a divorce.
6. GODLY COUNSEL
Going to church regularly enables us to receive godly counsel from church leaders such as pastors, teachers, deacons, and ministers that God has gifted with the knowledge and wisdom we need to receive from them. Through regular exposure to their sermons, admonitions and advice when attending church, God will speak to you in a very personal way. Your faith in Christ will deepen and you will find the spiritual leadership and guidance to face any circumstance in life.
7. A PLACE OF FELLOWSHIP
Finally, the local church is designed to be a place where like-minded believers can gather together for social and spiritual interaction. You will be surrounded by people who will love you, pray for you, and even fight for you – if necessary, to help you succeed in life. When you are too weak to go it alone, your church family will be there to support you in so many ways. Wherever you are heading in life, you cannot go it alone. Your local church is a great place to find help in achieving your goals.
LET’S DO THIS!
If you’re not actively involved in a local church, or perhaps you’ve stopped going to church, I want to encourage you to get back on the right track. God commands us NOT to forsake the assembling of ourselves together (Hebrews 10:25), so stop making excuses and make a special effort to be in church this week. You’ll be glad you did!
